What is the ruling on brokerage, and is the money the broker takes lawful?
Brokerage is the mediation between a seller and a buyer to complete a sale, and the broker is called a "dallal" (auctioneer/broker). It is a beneficial profession that people often need due to their unfamiliarity with bargaining methods, their inability to scrutinize goods, or their limited time. It is a condition for the broker to be knowledgeable, trustworthy, and truthful, not favoring either party, and truthfully disclosing the defects and advantages of the commodity. A number of imams have stipulated the permissibility of brokerage and taking a fee for it, including Malik, Al-Bukhari, Ibn Sirin, Ata, Al-Nakha'i, Ibn Abbas, and Al-Hasan. This is also what the Permanent Committee and Sheikh Ibn Baz have issued fatwas on.
