The answer

Legitimate tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah) is seeking nearness through Allah’s Names, Attributes, and Actions, or through the righteous deeds performed by the worshipper himself. As for seeking nearness through the essence of created beings or their status, it is an innovation. There is no harm in seeking nearness through the right of invoking blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, or through the right of Allah’s Greatest Name, because both are seeking nearness through an action of Allah or one of His Names. However, supplicating by the blessing of the Messenger is not legitimate, because it is an innovative form of tawassul not mentioned in the Sacred Law, and it serves to block the means to shirk (polytheism).
