The answer

It is permissible for a woman to wash her deceased husband, without any disagreement and by consensus. It is also permissible for a man to wash his deceased wife, according to the majority of scholars, by analogy with her washing him, and based on Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) washing Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), as this was well-known and not denied by the Companions. As for the Prophet's (peace be upon him) to Aisha: "If you were to die before me, I would wash you and shroud you," scholars have spoken about its weakness.
