How will good deeds and bad deeds be weighed on the Day of Resurrection? And will major sins, followed by repentance, be weighed along with bad deeds? And will Allah forgive them, no matter how great they are? And how will the deeds of one who died without repentance be weighed? And can he be saved from the Fire by the abundance of his good deeds?

Belief in the Balance on the Day of Judgment is one of the pillars of belief in the Last Day. Scholars have differed regarding what will be weighed, holding three main opinions:

1. The deeds themselves: They will be embodied and weighed. The evidence for this is the hadith: "Two words are beloved to the Most Merciful, light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale: Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi, Subhan Allah Al-Azim (Glory be to Allah and His praise, Glory be to Allah, the Most Great)." 2. The doer himself: He will be heavy or light according to the measure of his faith and deeds, not because of the size of his body. The evidence for this is: "Indeed, a mighty, fat man will come on the Day of Judgment who will not weigh with Allah the wing of a mosquito." 3. The scrolls of deeds: The evidence for this is the hadith about the man with the card, which will be weighed against his records of deeds, and the card will outweigh them.

There is no contradiction between these opinions, and the weighing can be affirmed for all three matters.

As for sins, if one repents from them with sincere repentance, Allah will erase them from him; "The one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin." Allah forgives all sins through repentance, even polytheism. However, if one dies upon major sins without repentance, other than polytheism, he is under the will of Allah. And whoever's good deeds outweigh his evil deeds will be saved by the grace of Allah.
