Did Allah create us and give us life before this life, then cause us to die, then give us life again in this worldly life, and does our forgetting that not negate its occurrence?
Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) stated in His Noble Book that He took a covenant from the offspring of Adam to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, as confirmed by His saying: "And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify concerning themselves, [saying to them], 'Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yes, we have testified.' [This was] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, 'Indeed, we were unaware of this.' Or [lest] you should say, 'Our fathers invented association [with Allah] before, and we were descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?'" At that stage, everyone affirmed Allah's Lordship, but most of them associated partners with Allah and disobeyed Him when they came to the worldly life.
Ibn Kathir mentioned in his exegesis of this verse, quoting Ibn Abbas, that Allah wiped Adam's back and extracted from it every soul He created until the Day of Judgment. He took a covenant from them to worship Him alone and not associate anything with Him, and He guaranteed their provisions, then He returned them to his loins. This implies that whoever grasped the latter covenant and fulfilled it, the first covenant would benefit them. As for those who did not acknowledge it, it would not benefit them. And whoever died as a child, died upon the primordial nature (fitra). This does not mean that people lived and witnessed what they witness today, or that what a person imagines to have happened to them before is proof that they actually witnessed it. The transmigration of souls is a false belief and a corrupt idea that is neither intellectually sound nor legally acceptable in Islam.
