The question

What is the ruling on the delayed zakat of money and gold when the date of the completion of the nisab is unknown, and how is the price of one gram of gold calculated for past years? Is zakat obligatory on the mother who manages the father’s money, the amount of which he does not know, and is the father’s knowledge a condition for giving out zakat? What is the ruling on the mother giving out a sum of money with the intention of zakat without the father’s knowledge or calculation, and is that sufficient? Is it permissible to distribute money to the children without the father’s knowledge, and is it permissible for one of the children to waive their share to their siblings?

The answer

Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam, and withholding it is a major sin. You must know when your wealth has reached the nisab (the threshold amount, which is 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of pure silver), and pay zakat immediately if a year has passed while the wealth remains at or above the nisab.

If the gold is jewelry for permissible use, the majority of scholars hold that zakat is not obligatory on it, while some obligate it, which is the more cautious opinion. Zakat is then paid at a rate of 2.5% of its value.

If the wealth belongs to your mother, zakat is obligatory on her, and there is no condition to inform the father. However, if the wealth is deposited with the mother but belongs to the father, zakat is obligatory on the father, and his knowledge and permission are required.

It is not permissible to give zakat to children whose maintenance is obligatory upon you, nor is it permissible to distribute the father's wealth without his knowledge.
