How authentic is the saying attributed to Ibrahim ibn Adham: "Prices soared, so he said: By God, it does not concern me even if a grain of wheat were for a dinar; my duty is to worship Him as commanded, and His is to provide for me as promised," and does the phrase (and His is upon Him) imply disrespect towards God?

If the statement attributed to Ibrahim ibn Adham is authentic, its meaning is that servitude to Allah is the primary concern, not sustenance, in accordance with His saying: (And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me. Indeed, Allah is the Provider, Owner of Power, the Ever-Mighty). And his saying "He must provide for me as He promised" means that Allah is the Provider and has guaranteed the sustenance of every creature and human, as stated in His saying: (And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision), and (And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allah provides for it and for you). This is a commitment from Allah, glorified be He, to Himself; no one obliges Him to do so. Therefore, a Muslim should not be overly concerned with the matter of sustenance, for sustenance is predetermined, and no soul will die until it has received its full provision.
