Is it permissible for an administrative employee at the Saudi Electricity Company to accept gifts or sums of money from citizens with whom he deals regarding land compensation, knowing that he did not ask for them, and that they are offered to him after the completion of the transaction and his good treatment of them? And what is the ruling of Sharia on this?

Authentic hadiths have come forbidding gifts given to workers and employees because of their positions, as they are given to them for the jobs they hold. In the hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did he not sit in the house of his father and mother, and see if he would be given gifts or not?!" He also said: "Whoever We appoint to a job and provide him with a salary, then whatever he takes after that is ill-gotten gain (ghulul)." Therefore, gifts given to an employee for performing a job for which he receives a salary are forbidden (haram). Al-Nawawi said: "Gifts for work are forbidden." Al-Khattabi said: "Gifts for workers are unlawful earnings (suht)." Accordingly, it is not permissible for an employee to accept any gift from clients for his work for which he receives a salary, because that is considered unlawful earnings (suht) and ill-gotten gain (ghulul).
