Is it permissible for a wife to seek divorce due to financial hardship experienced by the husband that may be prolonged and cause distress to the wife?

If the husband is in financial difficulty but can provide the necessities for his wife (her daily sustenance, clothing, and housing), then she does not have the right to seek divorce, based on the Almighty's saying: "Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what He has given it. Allah will bring about ease after difficulty." However, if the husband is in financial difficulty and cannot provide the necessities, then the wife has the right to separation, based on the Almighty's saying: "Retention [of women] with honor or parting with benevolence," and based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If a man becomes unable to provide for his wife's maintenance, they should be separated." The husband must release the wife with benevolence if retaining her while he is in financial difficulty causes her severe harm, based on the Almighty's saying: "And do not retain them, intending harm, so that you transgress."
