What is the ruling on forgetting to invoke blessings upon the Prophet in the last Tashahhud in congregational prayer?
Sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the final is a pillar (rukn) according to the Shafi'is and is well-known among the Hanbalis. The minimum acceptable form is to say: "Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad" (O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad).
If someone prays alone or as an Imam and forgets to send blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the final Tashahhud, their prayer is invalid and must be repeated. This opinion is the more cautious one.
However, according to the opinion that it is a (recommended act) — which is the view of many scholars — if someone forgets it, their prayer is valid and does not need to be repeated.
