The answer

It is not permissible to abort a pregnancy except for a legitimate reason. If the pregnancy is within the first forty days, it is permissible to abort it for a legitimate benefit or to avert harm, not out of fear of hardship, inability to afford expenses, seeking a better future, or being content with existing children. It is not permissible to abort it after forty days (the stages of 'alaqah and mudghah) unless a reliable medical committee determines that its continuation poses a danger to the mother's safety, after exhausting all means to avert the dangers. After four months, it is not permissible to abort it unless trusted, specialized doctors determine that the continuation of the fetus will cause the mother's death, after exhausting all means to preserve its life, in order to avert the greater of two harms and achieve the greater of two benefits.
