Is using philosophy to ponder the verses of the Quran and the creations of Allah—such as His sayings, "And of everything We created two mates that you may remember," and "Everyone upon the earth will perish, but the Face of your Lord, owner of majesty and honor, will remain"—for the purpose of increasing faith and understanding, a sound action? And what is the guidance concerning this?

The Quran was revealed for contemplation and action, and it is among the best of deeds. For contemplation to be sound, it must adhere to certain controls: it must not contradict a text from the Quran or Sunnah, nor the interpretations of the Companions and the Pious Predecessors, and it must not deviate from the requirements of the Arabic language, the objectives of Islamic law, or its rules. Contemplation is not about fantasies or erroneous independent reasoning. One must be cautious of interpreting the Quran based on mere opinion devoid of evidence, or limited to one aspect, or driven by sectarian bias.
