What is the ruling on naming children Mutawakkil or Wathiq?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
There is no legal impediment to being named Al-Wathiq (the Trusting) or Al-Mutawakkil (the Relying), as they are not among the names of Allah. Any implicit commendation in them is overlooked, similar to being named "Hakim" (Wise) or "Karim" (Generous). It has been reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was described in the Torah as "Al-Mutawakkil". Some of the Tabi'in (successors) and Caliphs were given these names, and none of the scholars objected to that.
