What should a married couple do who deliberately aborted after having six children, because they did not wish to have more children and felt content with the offspring they already had?

Abortion is forbidden in Islamic law because it is an assault on a soul. The prohibition becomes more severe after the ensoulment. Abortion is not permissible except out of a necessity that is recognized by Islamic law, such as a danger to the mother's life, as affirmed by trustworthy Muslim doctors. Abortion due to having enough children is forbidden, and everyone who participates in it (the husband, wife, and doctor) is sinful. All of them are obligated to pay a ghurrah if the abortion occurs after forty days, which is a male or female slave. If that is not available, then half a tenth of the blood money (diyah). Scholars differed regarding the obligation of expiation (fasting for two consecutive months); the Shafi'is and Hanbalis ruled it obligatory by analogy with killing a soul, while the Hanafis and Malikis said it is recommended. Fasting is preferable to avoid disagreement.
