How does one repent of ongoing sins, what is their expiation, is repentance alone sufficient or must there be reform, and what should one do if unable to erase their sins?
For repentance from sins, there are conditions: abstaining from the sin, regretting having committed it, and resolving not to return to it. If the sin relates to the right of another human being, then the right must be restored or forgiveness sought. If the servant fulfills these conditions and is sincere, Allah accepts his repentance and erases the sin. "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'" The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin. If traces of the sin remain after repentance, one must strive to erase them if possible; otherwise, Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
