What is the ruling on celebrating a person's birthday?

Celebrating birthdays of all kinds is a forbidden innovation (bid'ah), as it was not part of the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor his noble companions. It was not known until after the three virtuous generations. Therefore, it is rejected, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, then it is rejected."
