What is the ruling concerning money found by the questioner that could not be returned to its unknown owner?

You must repent to Allah for what you have done. Part of your repentance is to return the money to its owner. If you cannot reach him, then give the amount as charity on his behalf. This is because, according to the majority of scholars, money whose owner cannot be identified should be spent on the welfare of the Muslims.
