Is it permissible to give zakat to healthy, strong, smoking, lazy individuals who do not work but have poor families? And is it for them or for their children?
Allah Almighty clarified the categories of zakat recipients in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60. The faqir (poor) is one who cannot find what suffices his needs or is unable to earn, and the miskin (needy) has a lighter need than him. Each is given what suffices them. Whoever is able to earn but is lazy about working does not deserve zakat, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Charity is not permissible for a rich person, nor for a strong, able-bodied person." If those supported by these lazy individuals are poor, it is permissible to deliver zakat directly to them without it falling into the hands of the lazy ones.
