If the owner of the fruit leaves it until it spoils, the zakat does not lapse; rather, its obligation remains a debt upon him. He must pay one-tenth if the irrigation was without cost, and half of that if it was with cost. It is recommended to give the fruit in charity to the needy if the owner has no need for it.
