Scholars have differed regarding on gold intended for adornment, but the safer approach is to consider it obligatory if it reaches the and a year has passed over it. The wife pays zakat on her gold, and you may pay it on her behalf with her permission. As for the children's gold, zakat must be paid for each one of them individually if it reaches the nisab on its own. The gold of some of them should not be combined with the gold of others, nor with the wife's gold. The amount of zakat is one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%).
