What is the ruling of the Sharia on one who refuses to work under the pretext of devoting himself to the mosque, knowing that he receives monthly financial assistance from the Dutch government (unemployment benefits)?

If a servant has what suffices him and those he supports, he is permitted to leave work. The majority of scholars, however, hold that earning, not for the sake of accumulation but exceeding one's needs, is better than dedicating oneself solely to worship, provided the servant intends thereby to attain obedience to Allah and benefit others. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The most beloved people to Allah Almighty are those who are most beneficial to people." There is no objection to what the aforementioned person does, as long as what he receives is sufficient to meet his needs and the needs of those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him. Indeed, provisions may be granted through the blessing of others, as stated in the Hadith: "Perhaps you are provided for by him."
