What is the ruling on joining a mixed-gender university (without urgent necessity), given that the girl adheres to the hijab and avoids mixing with young men? And what is the response to those who justify joining such a university due to the unavailability of unmixed universities, with the aim of academic advancement? Is it permissible to attend general mixed-gender lectures outside the university, with the sexes separated in seating, given that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, allocated separate days and lessons for women, while you previously issued a fatwa permitting attendance of mixed-gender lectures on condition of separation in seating?

Mixing (of genders) in universities is forbidden and leads to corruption. It is obligatory to be wary of enrolling in them unless there is an urgent necessity or a need that approaches it. In such cases, adherence to the regulations of Sharia (definition) is obligatory. If there is segregation between the sexes, along with lowering the gaze and maintaining modesty, then studying is permissible. The need for educating girls should not come at the expense of religion and honor. Preserving religion, life, and honor takes precedence over all else. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, designating a day for women does not prevent attendance at lessons that adhere to Sharia, as women sometimes attended lessons with men in the mosque.
