Will a wife be sinful if she sometimes pushes her husband away because she feels a lack of dignity due to his neglect and abuse, despite her attempts to make him understand that respect is the foundation of the relationship?
It is the wife's right to be treated kindly and not to have her face struck, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined this. And whoever strikes his wife's face has committed a grave transgression. Nevertheless, it is advised to be patient with him, counsel him, supplicate for him, and seek help from those who hold influence with him. However, if he does not fear Allah concerning her, then she should fear Allah concerning him and not neglect his rights, because a wife's obedience to her husband in what is good is obligatory. If patience does not avail and the situation reaches a point where the harm becomes unbearable, then the wife has the right to seek divorce to avert harm from herself, such as unjustified beating or verbal abuse. But it is better to be patient and not seek divorce for the sake of the children, if possible.
