Is it permissible to tear out Surat Al-Fatihah from a torn Mus'haf, place it in water, and drink its writing?
Writing the Qur'an and washing it off with water and then drinking it is a matter over which scholars have differed, between permissibility and detestability. Ibn Abi Shaybah dedicated a chapter to its permissibility, and narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Ibn 'Abbas, 'A'ishah, Abu Qilabah, Mujahid, and 'Ata' its permissibility. He also narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i its detestability. Al-Baghawi summarized that al-Nakha'i and Ibn Sirin disliked it. Ibn al-Haj narrated from Al-Maziri the permissibility of treating oneself by writing the Qur'an and supplications in water and drinking it, and that the shaykhs used to do so. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' issued a allowing it. In conclusion, the majority of scholars permit writing something from the Qur'an and then drinking its water, and there is no difference between that and taking what is written from a torn and washing it off with water and then drinking it.
