Is it permissible to strike someone who insults Allah, or the Messenger, or the Companions, after advising them and repeatedly warning them, and is it obligatory to rebuke and discipline them if they are unknown, with the possibility of a fight breaking out? And is it better to strike them, or advise them, or complain about them, and what advice should be given to such a person? And is it permissible to retaliate with a similar blow if it is to the face?

One must advise the one who curses Allah or His Messenger and forbid him from this evil. His punishment is death if he does not repent, but only the ruler or his deputy can execute him. It is possible to inform the authorities about him so they can take the necessary measures. As for retaliation by striking the face, Ibn Al-Qayyim permitted it and cited the actions of the Messenger and the Companions as proof. However, the Hanafis, Shafi'is, and Malikis disagreed with him, seeing it only as a form of discretionary punishment (ta'zir). Yet, Ibn Al-Qayyim believed that retaliation in such cases is more appropriate to achieve justice and equivalence, citing verses from the Holy Quran and the actions of the Companions.
