What is the ruling on practicing sports to strengthen and beautify the body, and does this fall under the concept of "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty," and is it disliked for a man to neglect his body until he becomes fat and repulsive?
Practicing sports is a good thing. If you intend by it to strengthen yourself for obedience to Allah, then it becomes an act of obedience for which you will be rewarded. If you intend by it to improve your physical appearance, it is permissible, due to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "Indeed, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty." It is praiseworthy for a Muslim to have a good appearance and a strong physique, due to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both." The strength of the body increases the believer's goodness if he uses it to obey Allah. What is blameworthy is obesity resulting from excessive consumption of food and drink.
