The answer

Depression may be an illness requiring treatment, or merely a transient distress that dissipates with worship, remembrance [of Allah], and good companionship. A woman is not permitted to seek divorce except for a legitimate Shar'i (Islamic legal) excuse. If she seeks it without hardship, the scent of Paradise is forbidden to her. If the depression is due to the husband's ill-treatment or her dislike of him, the family must try to reconcile and consult with the husband. The wife should occupy herself with beneficial work and be patient regarding her distance from her family, and the husband and the wife's family should cooperate to help her.
