What is the ruling on uncovering the shroud of the coffin while walking in the funeral procession, and placing sand on the body after burial?

The bier should not be uncovered, especially in the case of a woman's funeral, as it is desirable to cover her funeral procession. As for backfilling with earth, the Sunnah in burying the deceased is the lahd (niche grave), by digging a niche in the qabr (grave) on the side facing the qiblah, placing the deceased in it, then sealing it with bricks and backfilling with earth. If lahd is not possible due to loose soil, then the shaqq (trench grave) is used, which is digging a trench wide enough for the deceased's body, covering it, and then backfilling with earth. The deceased is laid on their right side in the lahd or shaqq, facing the qiblah with their face, and supported from behind with earth to prevent them from rolling over. A brick or stone is placed under their head. Shafi'i jurists have explicitly stated the impermissibility of backfilling earth directly onto the deceased's body without a lahd or shaqq, as it constitutes disrespect and a violation of sanctity. Burying the deceased in a coffin is disliked by consensus, except in wet or loose soil. The Malikis held that filling with earth is preferable to a coffin if lahd and shaqq are not possible.
