Is expiation required of one who swears a legitimate oath, such as inviting someone to eat a meal by saying: "By Allah the Almighty, you must eat, so-and-so"?
If a person who swore an oath concerning another person breaks that oath—for example, if they swore that someone would eat food, but that person did not—then the oath-taker must offer an expiation (): feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If unable to do any of these, then fasting for three days. A Muslim should not frequently swear by Allah, as Allah the Almighty says: "And do not make [your oath by] Allah an obstacle against your being righteous and fearing Allah and making peace among people. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing." (Quran 2:224). The person about whom the oath was sworn must fulfill the oath-taker's قسم (qasam - oath) as much as possible, based on the : "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us to do seven things… and to fulfill an oath."
