Who is the Prophet referred to in the verse, "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and greet him with [due] submission," is it our master Muhammad or our master Abraham, especially given our recitation in the Tashahhud: "O Allah, bless our master Muhammad as You blessed our master Abraham"?

The verse (إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا) "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and greet him with [due] greetings" (Quran 33:56) was revealed concerning the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Imam Al-Shawkani addressed the issue of likening the blessings upon the Prophet to the blessings upon Abraham and his family with several responses, among them: that the resemblance is between the essence of prayer (blessing) and the essence of prayer, not between the extent [of the blessings]; or that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, desired to be remembered honorably by later generations, like Abraham; or that he is part of Abraham's family. Furthermore, none of the formulas for sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, contain the word "Sayyiduna" (our master), and the verse does not mention the prophets sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but rather the blessings of Allah and the angels.
