The answer

Zakat is obligatory on gold if it reaches the nisab, whether it is prepared for trade or not. An exception to this is permissible jewelry prepared for personal use, concerning which there is a difference of opinion, and the preponderant view is that zakat is obligatory on it. The nisab for pure gold (24-karat) is 85 grams, and the amount due is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of the gold itself, or its value in cash at the current day's price, after a year has passed on it.
