The answer

This vow is binding and must be fulfilled, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him." It is preferable to hasten its fulfillment, as the majority of scholars hold that a general vow must be fulfilled immediately. There is no harm in giving it for the sponsorship of an orphan if the orphan is poor, while noting the necessity of intending it as a vow when giving it. Therefore, what was previously given without this intention is not sufficient.
