The answer

A husband must treat his wife kindly, and this includes fulfilling her need for sexual intercourse (waty'), which is among her most emphasized rights upon him. Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of sexual intercourse: whether it is once every four months or according to the wife's need and the husband's ability. The latter opinion is the more correct one. It is not permissible for a husband to abandon sexual intercourse with his wife until she requests it, as she should not be burdened with that difficulty. If the husband abandons sexual intercourse and the wife is harmed, she has the right to seek divorce. However, she is not permitted to seek divorce without harm. One should be cautious in seeking divorce and not resort to it unless it is clear that there is a benefit in doing so. It is advisable to discuss the matter with the husband kindly and to supplicate for his guidance.
