Are household chores obligatory for a woman, and if not, how should they be divided between the spouses, taking into account that the husband works most of the day? And is it fair for the man to work and then do household chores while the woman remains idle?

The jurists differed regarding the obligation of a wife to serve her husband. What is deemed authoritative by us is its obligation, provided it is done in a reasonable manner (bil-ma'ruf). As for the majority who hold it is not obligatory, their evidence is that the marriage contract is for enjoyment, not for service. However, they consider it among good customs. Ibn Qudamah mentioned that what is contracted from the wife's side is enjoyment, so nothing else is obligatory upon her. He also stated that the Prophet's division of duties between Ali and Fatima was based on what is appropriate in terms of manners and common practice, not as an obligation. Similarly, Asma bint Abi Bakr's tending to Al-Zubayr's horse was not obligatory upon her. It is more appropriate for the wife to do what is customary for her to do for the organization of livelihood.
