The nisab (threshold) for banknotes is estimated by the value of gold or silver, whichever is more beneficial to the poor. Zakat is obligatory on inherited money if a hawl (lunar year) has passed over it and it has reached the nisab. The amount of zakat is one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%). If the payment of zakat is delayed for years without a legitimate shar'i (Islamic legal) excuse, it must be paid for all past years, and an estimation of the wealth and number of years should be made based on best judgment. If the mother pays zakat on behalf of her non-adult children, it is sufficient if the amount paid is adequate. However, for adult children, it is not sufficient unless with their permission. Usurious interest is prohibited and must be disposed of by spending it on charitable causes. As for land, there is no zakat on it unless it is sold and a hawl passes on its price.
