Is memorizing the Holy Qur'an obligatory upon every Muslim?

The jurists have concluded that memorizing parts of the Qur'an other than Surat Al-Fatihah and an accompanying surah is not an individual obligation (fardh 'ayn), but rather a communal obligation (fardh kifayah). If a sufficient number of people memorize the Qur'an, the sin is lifted from everyone; otherwise, everyone is sinful. The hadith: "Let the one who has the most Qur'an lead you in prayer" indicates the existence of differences in memorization among the Companions, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not disapprove of it.
