Is a wife sinful if she refuses intercourse due to an illness that causes severe and continuous bleeding outside of her menstrual period?
It is forbidden for a wife to refuse intercourse if her husband calls her, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If a man calls his wife to his bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, the angels curse her until the morning." This prohibition includes refusal without a legitimate excuse, and the curse continues until the disobedience ceases or the wife repents.
However, she is permitted to refuse if there is a legitimate excuse, such as menstruation (with the permissibility of enjoying above the izaar), or an illness from which she would be harmed by intercourse, or an obligatory fast.
Based on this, if the low platelet count and bleeding that the wife experiences would worsen her illness or cause the transmission of bacteria, as determined by the doctor, then this constitutes an excuse that permits her to refuse intercourse. In this case, the husband must be patient until she recovers, or he may marry another.
