If the bleeding continues after forty days, it is considered istihadah (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding). Therefore, prayer and fasting should not be abandoned on its account, unless it coincides with her regular menstrual cycle. As for discharge that is not confirmed to be blood, it is not considered menstruation.
