Is delaying visiting relatives for long periods considered severing ties of kinship?

Islamic law has not specified a particular method for maintaining kinship ties. Rather, the prevailing custom is the reference point for the means and timing of maintaining these ties. Kinship ties are maintained through visits, communication, correspondence, and greetings, and everything that people consider to be a form of connection. Maintaining kinship has various degrees; the lowest of these is refraining from estrangement and exchanging greetings. It varies according to ability and need, with some forms being obligatory and others recommended. Relatives are not all on the same level, and the ruling on maintaining ties with them differs based on the presence of mahramiyyah (unmarriageability due to kinship) and the varying customs and traditions of people.
