Is a significant increase in dowries considered to be from the Sunnah, and has Islamic law set a specific limit for the dowry that may not be exceeded?

Marriage is one of Allah’s signs and a great blessing. Allah has commanded it for the benefits it entails, such as increasing the Muslim nation and safeguarding the youth. Although the mahr (dowry) is a right for the woman, excessive mahr hinders marriage and contradicts the objectives of the Sharia (definition), which encouraged its reduction and facilitation. This is supported by the hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Sunnah (definition), as well as the Sunnah of his Companions, who advocated for simple dowries, such as Ali's shield for Fatima, and the dowries of the Prophet's daughters and wives, which did not exceed twelve uqiyahs. Exaggeration in dowries is reprehensible, makes marriage difficult, and diminishes its blessings. It can also engender hostility in the husband's heart. The wisdom behind reducing the mahr is to facilitate marriage and prevent moral and social corruption.
