The names of Allah are tawqifiyyah (restrictive), meaning it is not permissible to affirm a name for Allah without evidence, and there is no room for analogical reasoning (qiyas) in this matter. Scholars have differed regarding what has come in the form of a verb or a construct noun (ism mudaf), whether it is permissible to derive a name from it or not. The preferred view is to suffice with what has been stated in the sacred texts. The name "As-Sadiq" (The Truthful) falls under this category of difference. It has not been authentically established with the word "name" except in a weak report, but some have derived it from the verb form that is confirmed in the Quran. The scope of reporting about Allah and supplicating to Him is broader than the scope of naming Him.
