Is Umrah—mentioned in the Hadith alongside Friday prayer and Ramadan as expiations for sins—considered obligatory, even though it is not, or does its frequent performance diminish its importance compared to prayer and fasting, and what is the recommended frequency for its performance for those who are able?
It has been established that the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah to Jumu'ah, and Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for what occurs between them, provided that major sins are avoided. And that 'Umrah to 'Umrah is an expiation for what occurs between them. And Hajj Mabrur (an accepted Hajj) has no reward except Paradise. The similarity in reward does not necessitate similarity in ruling; for an act may not be obligatory yet expiate sins by the grace of Allah. The doer may not attain the mentioned reward due to a flaw in the action, so a Muslim should not be complacent in performing acts of obedience, but rather hasten to them. Allah Almighty praised those who perform righteous deeds while fearing that they may not be accepted from them. We advise anyone for whom it is easy to perform 'Umrah frequently to hasten to it and perform it often due to its great virtue.
