Does zina mean sexual intercourse, and are there different degrees of it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Adultery has varying degrees of punishment. Some forms constitute a major sin that necessitates the prescribed hadd punishment, which is the sexual intercourse of a legally competent individual with a human female without any doubt regarding its unlawfulness. There is also a lesser or metaphorical form of adultery, as mentioned in the hadith: "Indeed, Allah has decreed for the son of Adam his share of adultery, which he will inevitably attain. The adultery of the eye is gazing, the adultery of the tongue is speaking, and the soul wishes and craves, and the private parts either confirm that or deny it." Among the metaphorical forms of adultery are: looking at forbidden things, listening to them, touching a non-mahram woman, kissing her, walking towards adultery, engaging in unlawful conversation with a non-mahram woman, or having sinful thoughts in the heart.
