How can I draw closer to Allah with love, and without distress or idleness?

The greatest proximity to Allah is achieved by performing the obligatory duties and increasing supererogatory acts, as stated in the Hadith Qudsi: "My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have enjoined upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory acts until I love him." The human soul experiences periods of enthusiasm and reluctance; therefore, if your soul is inclined towards obedience and supererogatory acts, take advantage of that without excess or negligence. If it is reluctant, do not burden it with what it cannot bear, while always maintaining the obligatory duties. And Allah knows best.
