The question

Does God count as a martyr someone who suffered calamities such as poverty, orphanhood, and injustice, then disobeyed God with sins less than major sins, sometimes prayed, did not fast due to illness, underwent many surgeries, always carried the Qur'an, dropped the Qur'an before his last surgery, and died of an abdominal illness?

The answer

One who dies from an abdominal illness is a martyr. We ask Allah to have mercy on the deceased and forgive him. We recommend supplicating for him for forgiveness and giving charity on his behalf. Illnesses and calamities are expiations for sins. If the deceased was unable to fast until he died, then it is not prescribed to make up the fasts on his behalf, nor to make up the prayers he missed. As for the accidental dropping of a Mushaf, there is no sin in that.
