Must all the conditions of the waiting period (iddah) be observed for a deceased husband, despite severe disagreements and continuous abuse from him, while limiting oneself to not marrying or adorning, and sufficing with family visits, work, and recreational places for children?

A husband's insult, verbal abuse, abandonment, or unlawful physical abuse of his wife is Islamically forbidden and constitutes ill-treatment. Despite this, a widow must observe the 'iddah (waiting period) of death (four months and ten days) in compliance with Allah's command. Ill-treatment does not affect the manner of the 'iddah. She must remain in her home and abstain from adornment. She may only leave during the day for her needs, provided she spends the night in her home. Leaving at night is permissible only out of necessity, with the same condition. However, leaving to visit family or for recreation is not permissible. Leaving for work is permissible if there is a need, while observing the Sharia guidelines. Offering condolences is also Islamically commendable.
