The answer

It is permissible for a Muslim to retaliate against insults in kind without exceeding the limit, based on the Almighty's saying: "Allah does not like the public utterance of evil, except by one who has been wronged," and the : "The two who revile each other, the sin of what they say falls upon the one who began it, unless the wronged one transgresses the limit." However, forgiveness and not retaliating are better and entail a greater reward. As for accustoming oneself to repentance, it is achieved through self-monitoring and paying attention to one's actions, being keen on what the has permitted, and then hastening to repent if one's self is overcome. For Allah has commanded repentance and encouraged it, promising mercy and forgiveness.
