What is the ruling on receiving a salary from the Awqaf (Endowments) for the position of a muezzin, and does that affect the reward and recompense?

It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that the muezzin who volunteers for the adhan, out of desire for reward from Allah, is better than others. Nevertheless, scholars have permitted the muezzin to take a wage from the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal) or from endowments (awqaf) specifically allocated for muezzins and imams; because that assists him in performing this righteous deed and ensures his commitment to it. Some scholars are of the opinion that the prohibition against taking a wage for the adhan refers to pre-stipulating a wage, not to taking from the public treasury, which is for the general welfare of the Muslims. The most complete and best is he who dedicates himself to the adhan without taking a wage, if Allah has bestowed ample provision upon him.
