What is the ruling on someone who says: "I covenant with Allah that I shall live for Allah and die for Allah"? And is anything binding upon him?

Fulfilling such a covenant is often difficult, especially concerning death. Therefore, the one who makes it must offer an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yamin), because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The expiation for a vow is the expiation for an oath." The preponderant opinion is that a covenant with Allah, if it entails an act of devotion and obedience, is both a vow (nadhr) and an oath (yamin). However, if it entails something that is not an act of devotion, it is only an oath.
