Is it permissible to invoke blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: "O Allah, bless our Prophet Muhammad and grant him peace," as an interpretation of the noble verse: "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and greet him with [a respectful] greeting"?

Performing prayers upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: "Allahumma salli ala nabiyyina Muhammadin wa sallim tasleeman (O Allah, send prayers upon our Prophet Muhammad and grant him perfect peace)" is permissible. Any wording that conveys the meaning of prayer and peace and does not contain any Sharia-prohibited elements is also permissible. However, it is better to adhere to the established wording in Al-Bukhari from Ka'b ibn Ujrah when the Companions asked the Messenger about how to pray upon him, and he said: "Say: 'Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallayta ala ali Ibraheema, innaka hameedun majeed. Allahumma barik ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ala Ibraheema wa ala ali Ibraheema, innaka hameedun majeed' (O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon the family of Abraham; You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham; You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious)." Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar deduced that this method is the best because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would not choose for himself anything but the most honorable.
